Heterocyclic Carbenes in Transition Metal Catalysis

N-heterocyclic carbenes, singlet carbenes with the carbene being incorporated in a nitrogen-containing heterocycle, were first investigated byWanzlick in the early 1960s [3]. Shortly thereafter, the first application of NHC as a ligand for metal complexes was independently described by Wanzlick [4] and Öfele [5] in 1968. Nevertheless, the field of N-heterocyclic carbenes as ligands in transition metal chemistry remained dormant until 1991 when a report on the extraordinary stability, isolation and storability of crystalline NHC IAd by Arduengo et al. ignited a rapidly growing research field.

Catalyzing Inquiry at the Interface of Computing And Biology(2005)

Catalyzing Inquiry at the Interface of Computing And Biology

Author: National Research Council (U. S.)

Publisher: National Academies Press

Publication Date: 2005-11

Number Of Pages: 443

Description

The remarkable growth of both computer science and biology in recent decades has drawn attention to their areas of intersection. Both fields have much in common; they are among the most rapidly changing fields of science, they both deal with very complex systems, and they both have profound implications for science and society. To examine the potential for greater interaction between the two fields, the National Research Council undertook a study looking at ways computational science can aid the development and understanding of biology and how the biological sciences might facilitate new and more powerful computational methods. This book presents an analysis of the potential synergies at the interface of the two fields and of ways to develop new collaborations between researchers in both areas to exploit those synergies. The book provides a large sample of well-documented examples of these interactions. The study concludes that the impact of computing on biology will be deep and profound and span virtually all areas of life science research. Computational biology will ultimately become part of the biological

A compilation of recent advances and applications in asymmetric catalysis

The field of asymmetric catalysis has grown rapidly and plays a key role in drug discovery and pharmaceuticals. New Frontiers in Asymmetric Catalysis gives readers a fundamental understanding of the concepts and applications of asymmetric catalysis reactions and discusses the latest developments and findings. With contributions from preeminent scientists in their respective fields, it covers:

"Rational" ligand design, which is critically dependent on the reaction type (reduction, oxidation, and C-C bond formation)

Recent findings on activation of C-H bonds, C-C bonds, and small molecules (C=O, HCN, RN=C, and CO2) and the latest developments on C-C bond reorganization, such as metathesis

Advances in "chirally economical" non-linear phenomena, racemic catalysis, and autocatalysis

Some of the recent discoveries that have led to a renaissance in the field of organocatalysis, including the development of chiral Brönstead acids and Lewis acidic metals bearing the conjugate base of the Brönstead acids as the ligands and the chiral bi-functional acid/base catalysts

The book ends with a thought-provoking perspective on the future of asymmetric catalysis that addresses both the challenges and the unlimited potential in this burgeoning field. This is an authoritative, up-to-date reference for organic chemists in academia, government, and industries, including pharmaceuticals, biotech, fine chemicals, polymers, and agriculture. It is also an excellent textbook for graduate students studying advanced organic chemistry or chemical synthesis.

Book Description:

"Not using in-situ methods to examine catalytic processes is like studying a life with access only to the prenatal and postmortem states." This quote from the world renowned specialist in the field of in situ methods, read.freeduan.com Gabor A. Somorjai, clearly emphasizes the importance of these techniques in understanding heterogeneous catalysis - a type of chemical reaction used nowadays for most chemically produced supplies and fuels. Yet the fundamental mechanisms are often still not completely understood.

Many of the leading scientists in the field have contributed to this book which provides an overview of the most varied spectroscopic and related methods for studying catalytic structures and their functions during a chemical reaction. While primarily written for users of these methods, this is also a valuable aid to interpreting the phenomena observed. Indispensable for everyone working in the field.

Book Description: )

Nanocatalysis is one of the most exciting subfields to have emerged from nanoscience. Its central aim is the control of chemical reactions by changing the size, dimensionality, chemical composition and morphology of the reaction center and by changing the kinetics using nanopatterning of the reaction centers. This approach opens up new avenues for atom-by-atom design of nanocatalysts with distinct and tunable chemical activity, specificity, and selectivity. This book is intended to give a pedagogical and methodological overview of this exciting and growing field and to highlight specific examples of current research. In this way, it serves both as an instructive introduction for graduate students who plan to enter the field and as a reference work for scientists already active in this and related areas.
